« A visit was made on the 23rd April 1947 to Estinnes-au-Val where Lancaster ME620 crashed on the 9th May 1944, in order to establish any additional facts about the fate of the crew of this aircraft……

From the Burgomaster and his secretary I found that Lancaster ME620 crashed about 3.30 hours 9/10 May 1944. The a/c blazed furiously and four large explosions, presumably bombs, took place. One man escaped and was sheltered in the village until the liberation in September…..The germans arrived soon after the crash and prevented anyone from approaching. «
