A Letter to Mr Cameron:…… Through captured German records it was ascertained that the aircraft in which your son was fying wasshot down on August 28th, 1943. Due to the severe nature of the crash, Sergeant Carrington, a member of the Royal Air Force, was the only member of the crew who could be identified. The records goes on to state that the remains of all members of the crew were buried at Hellmitzheim, which is situated 15 miles North West of Neustadt, Germany. ……. Ottawa, Canada, 17th June, 1946

Crashed at Erlangen
Information received on Dec. 12th 1946 during investigations in Thurn and Heroldsbach revealed that a crash occured in Bubenreuth during the night 27/28 August 1943. On the 15th January, 1947, I visited the village of Bubenreuth where I contacted the Burgemeister Hans Paulus. paulus states that between 0200 and 0300 hrs. on August 28th, 1943 a Lancaster or Halifax aircraft of the Royal Air Force crashed at Bubenreuth. There were nine in the crew, five of whom are killed, one seriously injured and three escaped. Of the five who were killed, Paulus stated that the bodies were badly burned and in a mutilated condition. The five were buried in the Central Cemetery at Erlangen…… Paulus was not certain of how the aircraf was shot down but thought that it was due to anti-aircraft fire . I further interviewed Konrad Vestner, Backermeister, Bubenreuth Haus 43, who was on duty as a special constable at the time of the crash, in the night of 27/28 August 1943. After the crash occured he was ordered to investigate…. Vestner further states that between the villages of Brauningshof and Bubenreuth he found a wounded flyer. He said the flyer wore three chevrons his sleeve and that he was very badly wounded. One leg was severed andone arm broken, as well as varous other bruises and burns. Vestner gave the flyer first aid as coffee as a simulant. The flyer was shortly afterwards taken to the Kollegien Hospital at Erlangen and operated on…..Signed Squadron Leader

Crashed at Dürrnbuch
« I contacted Herr Buögel, Burgomaster of Dürrnbusch in 943, at the time of the above mentioned crash. Herr Buögel stated that on the night of 27/28 August 1943, between 0100 & 0300 hrs. a four engined aircraft crashed in flames 1 km. south of Dürrnbusch. it is beleived that the aircraft was shot down by fighters, as there were no anti-aircraft units in that area. He did not know the type of aircraft and could not remember if the aircraft had a double tail unit. Four bodies were found beside the wreckage, and were buried in Dürrnbusch with full military honors by personnel from the German Air Force Station at Illersheim. The names of these flyers were know, but the fate of the rest of the crew was not know…..
Herr Wiesenger, stated that a parachutist was captured in Kirchfemba on the 29th August 1943, and was believed to be from the Dürrnbusch crash. He was taken to the Air Force Station at Herzogenaurach…… A.R. Garven F/O Innvestigating Officer 7/2/47

…. Investigating Officers of this service have ascertained that your son (F/S D.JMullen)’s aircraft crashed by a railway culvert a few hundred yards from Munstermaifeld Cemetery……The graves of the crew were located in the village cemetery. ….Whilst on a casualty enquiry it was brought to my attention that an aircraft crashed at Munstermaifeld on the 28th August, 1943. The Amtsburgermeister could give me no information except for the fact that the aircraft crashed by a railway culvert, only a few hundred yards from the cemetery. he also stated that at the time of the crash there had been an explosion; he also stated that the Wehrmacht had removed all parts of the aircraft….. Crashed at Mausdorf
Former Emskirrhen chief-of-police Wiessinger stated that at approximately 0215 hrs in the morning of 28th August 1943 a four-engined bomber crashed in flames in a field near Mausdorf. The aircraft was completely destroyed and burnt out, and the parts scattered over an area of 200 metres. One member of the crew was found with a fractured skull some 30m. from any aircraft remains, and several other charred and dismembered bodies lay underneath the various remains. At 3,5 and 6 a.m. the same morning parachutists were captured at Ober-Wembach, near Pirkach and at Kirch-Fembach. The one captured at 3 a.m. had considerable injuries and was taken to hospital in Fuerth and the other two were fetched by personnel from the Luftwaffe station at Herzogen-aurach. These parachutists would appear to belong to the crew of Lancaster W4364 which crashed at Durnbusch……
